Julia Roberts' new movie is a funny romantic comedy about what happens when you discover you're in love with the guy you've been friends with since college. This is an enjoyable little movie: good but not great. My Best Friend's Wedding also stars the wooden Dermot Mulrooney as Robert's best friend, Cameron Diaz as his super-rich, sickly-sweet bride-to-be (Get ready for a much needed insulin injection after meeting this North Shore princess!), and the surprisingly wonderful Rupert Everett as Julia Robert's other best friend. Without a doubt, the gorgeous Rupert steals the movie with some great lines and smooth moves. (Why, oh why did they have to make him gay!) Be sure to watch for the great restaurant scene where he spins a tale of how he and Julia's character meet in a mental institution. The whole restaurant joins their table in a great rendition of Dionne Warwick's "I Say A Little Prayer For You".
Julia Robert's character is a bit of a bitch in this movie - she employs every dirty trick in the book to steal somebody else's man. But, frankly I find Julia's character less annoying than the cloying fiancee she's trying to one-up. The director does do a good job of keeping you guessing who the guy is going to end up with.
One thing I have to say about this movie is that everyone looks good - from Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz to Dermot Mulrooney and Rupert Everett. Plus, My Best Friend's Wedding was filmed on location in Chicago and the city looks great!!!
I would check out My Best Friend's Wedding - there are some funny scenes, a nostalgic soundtrack and it's probably a pretty good date movie. Guys will probably not be too crazy about it but they can be consoled by the fact that Julia Roberts hasn't looked this good since Pretty Woman.
