Gigi's Video Picks

Feel like staying at home tonight... Well then, grab a video, make some microwave popcorn and settle in to watch a great video.  Gigi moves to video - check out this page for reviews and recommendations for some great movies that you may have missed at the theater - recent releases as well as old favorites.

Recent Releases

Austin Powers:  International Man of Mystery -- Groovy, baby!

Batman & Robin

Breakdown   -- a surprisingly good thriller starring Kurt Russell.  Definitely worth the price of a rental.

Big Night -- A heartwarming story about two brothers trying to make a success of their little Italian restaurant - a great little movie.  But beware, you'll want a big bowl of pasta after watching this movie.

The Crucible -- Intense performances by Daniel Day-Lewis and Joan Allen make this a gripping film.

The Devil's Own -- Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford - the testosterone level runs high in this flick.

The English Patient  -- a tortured romance between two soul mates that is destined to end unhappily.  Oscar winner for Best Picture - a must see.
Ghosts of Mississippi  -- A true life story about the death of the great civil rights leader, Medgar Evers and the eventual conviction of  his killer.  Excellent performances by a luminous Whoopi Goldberg and James Woods.

Grosse Point Blank   -- a funny hip comedy about a hit man who returns for his 10 year high school reunion.  It stars the always likable John Cusack.

Jerry Maguire --  funny, warm and romantic and it's stars Tom Cruise - need I say more.

Lost World  -- overhyped but worth seeing.

Liar, Liar -- one of Jim Carrey's funniest movies.  Lawyer bashing at its best.

Love Jones -- this is one hot sexy film.  I highly recommend it.

My Best Friend's Wedding

The People v. Larry Flynt -- very funny and surprisingly touching.

Private Parts  - hysterical.  Meet the Howard Stern behind the myth.

One Fine Day  -- I caught this on video and it was a surprisingly good time - a light romantic comedy starring George Clooney and Michele Phieffer.

The Saint  -- Not a bad movie - Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue look good but the plot is a bit silly.

Scream -- I'm not a big horror fan but the buzz on this horror flick was strong and well-deserved and they're already making the sequel.

Sling Blade -- A quirky little movie. Better get some french-fried pertaters to eat while watching Billy Bob Thorton's performance.

Star Trek:  First Contact  -- This movie showcases one of the best of the new Star Trek villains:  The Borg although die-hard Trekkies might not like how they changed the character of the Borg.

Star Wars Trilogy -- One of Hollywood's greatest trilogies.  Epic stores, great special effects.  And remember, the prequels are filming now in the U.K. and should be released within a couple of years.  And in anticipation of the continuation of the movie series:  The D.C. News Star Wars Trivia Contest!  Coming Soon!!

Swingers - tough to find (especially on weekends) but this flick "is the money".

Oldies

Can't get ahold of the new release you want to see - a frequent occurrence at my local video store - so try one of these "classics" they're a guaranteed great time.

The Sure Thing  -- A sweet funny movie starring a young John Cusack as a slacker whose main ambition is to love his high school's valedictorian.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles  -- I still laugh when I see this movie even though I've seen it almost every year around Thanksgiving since it was released.  It's become a family tradition.  Steve Martin and the late John Candy are an unbeatable combination.

Point Break  -- This movie wasn't a huge commercial success but with a bleached blonde Patrick Swayze playing against type as a criminal and a muscled Keanu Reeves as the FBI agent sent to infiltrate his bank-robbing gang, this movie was fun.  Watch for those great surfing sequences.

School Daze  and She's Gotta Have It  -- Two of Spike Lee's best.  School Daze is set on the campus of a black university and it explores the divides that exist in the black collegiate community.  She's Gotta Have It does an interesting gender reversal role with the woman playing the field and her male partners feeling the pain.

Guilty Pleasures

These are movies so cheesy and corny you're almost embarrassed to tell anyone you love them - but they're so much fun to watch!

Caddyshack -- Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield at their collective comedic peak.

National Lampoon's Vacation -- any of them (those the original, the European, and the Christmas ones are the best) and don't you love how they keep getting different actors to play their kids, Russ and Audrey.

Animal House -- Hilarious!  Who could forget John Belushi's impression of a zit!

The Highlander  -- An intense thriller about a race of Immortals (they can only be killed by others of their kind) who live among us and are competing to be the last immortal on Earth.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High --  See tons of stars (i.e. Sean Penn, Phoebe Cates, Judge Reinhold, and Jennifer Jason-Leigh) before they were stars - this was the best of those cheesy teen sex movies of the 1980's.

Xanadu -- Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly??  Who dreamed this up?  But it works.
