THE PEOPLE v. LARRY FLYNT

Here in Washington, D.C., I had two choices this weekend: freezing my ass off to watch a ritual of Democracy or head to the dark and warm confines of the Arlington Courthouse theater to watch a portrayal of the Democratic ideal in action, the picture known as The People v. Larry Flynt.   Judging from the full capacity crowd, a lot of other Washingtonians took a pass on Clinton's second time around.   Somehow, I don't think Clinton would mind, he looks like a Hustler man to me.

Larry Flynt stars Woody Harrelson as the man himself (a God to some men judging from the size of their historic Hustler collections) and Courtney Love, as his drug-addled wife, Althea Leisure.  The movie traces Flynt's rise (and some might say fall) from his poor as dirt Kentucky roots to his millionaire status as publisher of Hustler, porn for the common man. Courtney Love's no holds barred performance was amazing and she deserves an Oscar nomination for her performance.  Does this woman have any inhibitions? Edward Horton, who so creeped us out in Primal Fear, also deserves a mention for his role as Flynt's long-time civil liberties attorney.

This movie is a hoot! It's rollicking fun with a little T & A thrown in. The movie also lampoons Flynt's real life battles with the leader of the Moral Majority, Jerry Falwell.  Never has a man made God-fearing Christianity so unseemly as the fatuous Falwell. The love story between Larry and Althea is also oddly endearing, even when they're gang banging in their Jacuzzi.

The script is snappily well-written, it's no wonder the script writers won a Golden Globe for best screenplay. Milos Forman also deserves kudos for his wonderful direction and he received it in the form of an award for Best Director at the Golden Globes. For a European, he does an amazing job of capturing 1970s sleaze to perfection.

Of course, some will say this movie favors Flynt to an unfair degree. And let's face it: Larry's vision that even working class stiffs needed to jerk off is hardly a noble one, but it makes for a great fun movie that pokes fun at America's hypocrisy concerning a number of issues, including sex.
